But the truce downbeat nature of the film, with the prospect of a feeling of regret for a woman who works as a Nazi guard and was at least partly responsible for the deaths of hundreds, is a bit much to ask. C is a point in the past forgiveness? Some crimes are so beyond comprehension that a mitigating circumstance is not sufficient? These issues are central to The Reader, their existence its biggest problem. The acting, especially by Kate Winslet is sometimes inspired.
